Dial Up Modem Noise

Don’t you miss dial-up modem noise? EEEEEEEE-OOOOOO-EEEEEE-GHGHGHGHGHGHHGHGHGHG

Did you ever wonder why they made it sound like that? (It was coming out of a speaker after all) It’s like they picked the most annoying sounds possible and played them at random. And at max volume.

Listen to some dial-up modem noise

hey i just realized i can comment here. I really miss the dial-up modem noise. But I like weird sounds, I’m in the minority i think. But it’s very nostalgic to hear a sound like that.

The noise you’re referring to is the actual tones used to establish a connection between two modems (the “handshake”) and communicate between them. By default, a lot of models allowed you to listen in to the handshake so that you could verify a solid connection was made. You could turn the speaker off by sending the command ATM0.
